Juoni

Mystinen miljonääri Mr. Finch on luonut tietokoneohjelman, joka osaa ennustaa tulevissa väkivaltaisissa rikoksissa jollain tavalla mukana olevien ihmisten henkilöllisyyden. Ohjelmalla on kuitenkin rajoituksensa: se ei pysty kertomaan onko henkilö syyllinen, uhri vai todistaja, eikä sitä missä tai milloin rikos tapahtuu. Finch ei pysty kuitenkaan estämään rikoksia itse, ja hän ottaakin yhteyttä entiseen CIA-agenttiin John Reeseen , jonka muut luulevat kuolleen. Yhdessä miehet ryhtyvät selvittämään tapauksia, ja vähitellen myös Reesen menneisyydestä paljastuu tuskallisia muistoja. Pian Reesen kohtalosta kiinnostuu myös itsepäinen naispoliisi, etsivä Carter.
