Los Angeles 1938. Kun raaka murha vavisuttaa kaupunkia, etsivä Tiago Vega ja hänen työparinsa Lewis Michener sotkeutuvat eeppiseen tarinaan, joka heijastaa Los Angelesin rikasta historiaa: kaupungin ensimmäisten moottoriteiden rakentamisesta meksikolaisamerikkalaisiin kansantaruihin, kolmannen valtakunnan vaarallisista vakoilutoimista radioevankelistoihin. Ennen pitkää Tiago ja hänen perheensä joutuvat keskelle vahvoja voimia, jotka uhkaavat repiä heidät hajalle.
