Kun Reed Richards, Sue ja Johnny Storm sekä pilotti Ben Grimm lähtevät ennenaikaiselle avaruuslennolle uudella sukkulalla, he saavat massiivisen annoksen kosmista säteilyä. He onnistuvat vain vaivoin palaamaan ilmakehään ja laskeutumaan. Nelikko huomaa muuttuneensa pysyvästi: he ovat kukin saaneet erilaiset supervoimat. He päättävät käyttää uusia voimiaan auttaakseen toisia ja muodostavat supersankarijoukon nimeltä Ihmeneloset, joka omistautuu suojelemaan Maata uhilta kuten Latverian kuningas Tohtori Doom ja planeettoja syövä Galactus.
