Tony Kushnerin palkittuun näytelämään pohjautuva minisarja sijoittuu 1980-luvun New Yorkiin, missä HIV:tä sairastava homomies Prior Walter saa vieraakseen enkelin ja kuuden toisilleen tuntemattoman henkilön elämäntarinat alkavat kietoutua yhteen hämmästyttävällä tavalla. Taustalla yhteiskunta on jatkuvassa muutoksessa Ronald Reaganin johtaessa Amerikkaa ja AIDS-epidemian nostaessa päätään.
